O' brother, where art thou?

Family bragging rights up for grabs

O' brother, where art thou?

Football is full of rivalries but is there any greater than that between two brothers?

Over the last few seasons Soccer AM has been stoking the fires between the most competitive brothers in the Football League.

Each season these brothers fight it out to see who can score the most goals to claim the only bragging rights in the family that really matter. Forget what teams they play for and in which league, in this competition the only thing that matters is that number in the goals column.

This season five brothers have chosen to take their duels public and we will be keeping track of how they are performing on the show and here on the website too.

Going head to head will be the Caldwells, the Hunts, the Ferdinands, the Terrys and for the first time the Wright-Phillips'.

The rules are simple, only competitive club goals count and unlike the Golden Shoe and Espadrille it doesn't matter how many games they each play in.

Caldwell v Caldwell

It was a successful week for the Caldwell's, who both enjoyed wins but neither could strike the first blow in their goal-scoring contest.

Gary Caldwell helped Celtic maintain their lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League with a 3-0 win over Kilmarnock. The Hoops remain three points clear of Hibs and four ahead of Rangers - though their Old Firm rivals have a game in hand.

Gary again failed to break his duck for the season but fortunately his older brother Steven was also off-target in Burnley's 2-0 win over struggling Hull.

Being defenders they will no doubt both be satisfied with having kept a clean sheet - but that counts for nothing in O Brother Where Art Thou?

Ferdinand v Ferdinand

Both Ferdinand brothers failed to make an appearance this week.

Rio, who has endured a troubled start to the season, was again sidelined by a reoccurrence of a calf injury, but would have been pleased to see his teammates go on to seal a 2-0 home win over Blackburn Rovers.

However, his brother, who was an unused sub at the Stadium of Light, would have been equally pleased to see his side - who had been reduced to ten men - battle back to seal a 2-2 draw against his old club, West Ham United.

Hunt v Hunt

It was a disappointing weekend in the Hunt household.

Older brother Stephen was victim of a harsh refereeing decision when he was adjudged to have brought down Tyrone Mears in the box - a penalty which set Burnley on course for a 2-0 win over Hunt's struggling Hull.

However, his troubles were put in to perspective by the announcement Noel is set to miss the rest of the season after having a knee operation last week to cure a persistent injury.

The Republic of Ireland forward had struggled to recover from a tendon problem in his left knee and will certainly miss much, if not all, of this campaign - dashing his hopes of representing his country at the World Cup, should Giovanni Trapattoni's men overcome France in their play-off clash.

Terry v Terry

The Terry brothers were both celebrating on Saturday night after their respective sides sealed victories to maintain their good start to the season.

John led Chelsea to an impressive 4-0 win over Bolton - their second 4-0 thrashing of Gary Megson's side in a week after their Carling Cup triumph. However, the Blues inspirational skipper was unable to score himself and still awaits his first goal of the season.

His brother was also victorious as his side sealed a 2-0 win over fellow-promotion hopefuls Luton Town, though, like his brother, Paul is still in search of his first strike this term after failing to find the net himself.

Wright-Phillips v Wright-Phillips

Shaun missed out on a golden opportunity to stretch his lead on brother Bradley this week as the winger and his Manchester City teammates were unable to breakdown a defiant Birmingham City defence.

Bradley remains sidelined with injury so Shaun holds the title as the only brother to have an advantage over his sibling in the O Brother Where Art Thou? contest so far this season.
