Sharpe: Dancing king

"I used to get a bit of stick for dancing round the corner flag, especially from the manager. He went berserk every time I did something stupid like that!"

Lee Sharpe
Quotes of the week

Lee Sharpe showed us some of his classic dance moves on Soccer AM!

The former Manchester United and Leeds star was renowned for pulling shapes on the pitch after hitting the net during his career and he proved he's still got the moves with an Elvis-esque shimmy before firing past our very own Baby Elvis to prove he still has the football skills as well.

The 38-year-old used to delight United supporters with his celebrations but Lee told us former boss Sir Alex Ferguson was certainly not a fan of Sharpe's shimmies!

"I used to get a bit of stick for dancing round the corner flag, especially from the manager," he told Helen and Max.

"He went berserk every time I did something stupid like that. I remember I actually scored a hat trick at Highbury on the Tuesday and then scored the winner at Everton on the Saturday.

"I did that stupid shuffle thing in front of our fans and he came straight on the coach after the game and he absolutely ripped me to shreds in front of everyone!"

Bold

However, as a bold youngster Sharpe wasn't afraid to test Ferguson's famous temper.

"I was scared but to balance it up I was only 19 or 20 at the time so I was still a bit stupid and I thought I need 30 seconds of your head exploding when you score a goal.

"After that I did it away at Aston Villa and I was half scared, half not so scared so I ended up doing a half shuffle to the crowd.

"The assistant manager at the time Archie Knox said afterwards 'I had to pull the manager back, he was halfway down the track ready to rip your head off and throw it in the crowd.

"He wasn't a happy bunny," Lee laughed.

Lee Sharpe Foundation

However, since those days Lee has matured somewhat and now spends much of his time working with the Lee Sharpe Foundation, helping underprivileged children in South Africa.

"I'm a patron of several soccer schools in South Africa," explained Lee. "We work with Ambassadors In Sport.

"They are based there all year round and I - along with my best mate and business partner Greg Thompson and a couple Colin and Tina Booth - go there about twice a year.

"We do a lot of fund raising, a couple of golf days and dinners, we've climbed Kilimanjaro, this summer we are cycling through South Africa and we are looking into walking to the North Pole.

"The lads from Ambassador In Sport are actually cycling through all of Africa. They started in Egypt in December but we're just getting on the glory leg through South Africa at the bottom!

"We'll be doing 1000km cycle which will take about eight or nine days. We'll be aiming to do 70 or 80 miles a day, 100 miles some days.

"But it's not the distance - it's the saddle soreness which is my main worry," Lee joked. "I'll make sure I have plenty of padding and Vaseline!"

Busy
Since retiring Lee has been kept busy with his charity work and also appearing on reality shows including Celebrity Love Island.

However, many former pros retire from the game and are at a loss as to what to do next.

Lee has also set up Encore, a scheme to help guide former players into a post-football career.

"My mate came out of Manchester City early because of an injury," Lee said. "He set up some soccer schools in America and paid his way through uni, he got himself a degree and then became a finance guy.

"I came out a little bit later and had a different sort of career but we both realised that once you stop playing you never know what to do.

"Everyone says 'yeah, I'll retire at 35, I'll play a bit of golf, I'll chill out, I won't do anything and I'm certainly not going to miss training or pre-season.

"But then you get to 37 or 38, just two or three years out of it, and you're bored out your tree. You don't know what to do or how to go about it.

"We don't say 'here is a job' we just give them a little bit of focus."
